Harin Fernando Asserts No Interim Committees for Sports Federations

Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Harin Fernando, has firmly stated that there will be no interim committees formed for any sports federations under any circumstances. This announcement underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining democratic processes and ensuring stability within sports organizations.

On May 29, 2024, Gazette No. 2386/08 was issued specifically to facilitate the proper conduct of office elections for four sports associations and federations. Fernando emphasized that this gazette is intended solely to ensure fair and transparent elections, and should not be interpreted as a step towards establishing interim governance structures.

“The policy of the Minister and the government is clear: no interim control committees should be placed in any sports association or federation,” Fernando stated. This decision aligns with the broader strategy of promoting transparency and accountability within sports organizations by ensuring that leadership positions are filled through democratic elections.

Fernando believes that the integrity and stability of sports federations can only be maintained through elected bodies, rather than temporary interim committees. This approach is designed to foster an environment where sports organizations operate independently and effectively, guided by representatives who are committed to the growth and integrity of their respective sports.

By upholding this strict policy, Fernando aims to contribute to the long-term success of sports federations across the country. The emphasis on democratic elections is seen as crucial for proper management and development, ensuring that leadership is both legitimate and accountable.

This clear stance from the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs is expected to reinforce confidence in the governance of sports federations, promoting a culture of transparency and stability that benefits all stakeholders involved in sports.

Minister Harin Fernando’s decisive stance against the formation of interim committees highlights the government’s dedication to preserving stable and democratically elected leadership within sports federations. This commitment ensures that the future of sports governance remains transparent and accountable.
