Sri Lanka Chosen for FIFA Pilot Project to Enhance Global Football

In an exciting development for football enthusiasts, Sri Lanka has been named among the select nations to host the FIFA Series, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at advancing the sport on a global scale. This move comes as part of FIFA’s Strategic Objectives for the Global Game: 2023-2027, following a decision by the FIFA Council in December 2022.

The FIFA Series is set to revolutionize international football by organizing friendly matches featuring four national teams from diverse confederations, all hosted in a single country. This initiative presents member associations with a unique opportunity to engage in regular competitions against teams from different continents, fostering technical development and growth within the sport.

For Sri Lanka, this presents a remarkable opportunity to reignite interest in football following a challenging period. With a passionate fan base eagerly awaiting the return of competitive matches, hosting the FIFA Series is poised to invigorate enthusiasm and draw spectators back to the stadiums to witness their favorite teams in action.

Scheduled to commence from 18 to 26 March 2024 as a pilot project, the FIFA Series will showcase national teams from all six confederations. Looking ahead, similar events are planned for every March international match window in even years, leading up to the full rollout in March 2026.

With Sri Lanka playing a pivotal role in this innovative endeavor, football aficionados can anticipate an exciting era of international football right in their own backyard.
