In a gripping showdown, Sri Lanka secured their spot in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with a hard-fought victory over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the semi-final clash. The experienced Sri Lankan squad showcased their resilience against a determined UAE side, ultimately clinching qualification for the prestigious tournament scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from 3 to 20 October.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka’s opening pair of Vishmi Gunaratne and captain Chamari Athapaththu laid a solid foundation with a composed 52-run partnership. Athapaththu’s aggressive strokeplay, including two consecutive sixes, posed a threat to the UAE bowling attack before her dismissal by leg-spinner Vaishnave Mahesh.
Gunaratne continued to anchor the innings, forming crucial partnerships with Harshitha Madavi and later with middle-order batters. Her resilient knock of 45 runs propelled Sri Lanka to a competitive total of 149 runs for the loss of six wickets.
In response, UAE showcased their batting prowess led by Esha Oza’s scintillating innings. Oza’s aggressive strokeplay and calculated shots, including four towering sixes, kept UAE in contention throughout the chase. Despite her heroics, Sri Lanka’s bowlers managed to contain the UAE batting lineup, with captain Athapaththu leading the bowling attack with two crucial wickets.
Oza’s dismissal in the 16th over marked a turning point in the match, as Sri Lanka seized control and restricted UAE to 134 runs for the loss of seven wickets at the end of their allotted 20 overs.
With this victory, Sri Lanka advances to the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier, where they will face Scotland in a highly anticipated showdown. The Sri Lankan team’s impressive performance underscores their strength and determination as they aim to make a mark on the global stage in the upcoming tournament.
